Borodin: Minsk to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia

14

Pavel Borodin, state secretary of the “union state” of Russia and Belarus, said he had no doubts that Minsk would recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

He said it at a press conference in RIA Novosti on February 5, BelaPAN writes.

“A procedure of recognition is being discussed. We have proposed to both South Ossetia and Abkhazia to approach on this matter, everything goes in a prescribed legal procedure, I have no doubts the republics will be recognized,” P. Borodin said answering the question about why Belarus hasn’t recognized independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Vasily Khrol, deputy state secretary of the “union state”, noted “Recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is to be discussed in the Belarusian parliament on April 2.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expressed its concern about the oncoming discussion in the Belarusian “parliament” and said if Minsk supported independence of the breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Tbilisi would regard this as an “unfriendly step”.

Russia recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia at the end of August last year.
