Polish MFA: We didn’t deliver ultimatum to official Minsk

Information, spread by Wprost daily, that the Polish MFA had conveyed an ultimatum to Belarus in connection with the congress of the Union of Poles in Belarus is untrue, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland says.

According to Wprost, the ultimatum was brought to Belarus through the diplomatic channels. It is said in the demands of Warsaw that Alyaksandr Lukashenka will be invited to the EU summit in Prague, if the Belarusian authorities don’t hinder holding of the congress of the unrecognized Union of Poles of Belarus, headed by Anzhalika Borys, scheduled for March 15.

The statement of the MFA says “the development of Polish-Belarusian relations have been recently marked by positive dynamics. There was ongoing dialog at the leadership level of the two foreign ministries. The talks concerned a broad scope of topics, among them economic issues, visas, national minorities, including the situation regarding the UPB, as well as relations between the EU and Belarus, with special reference to the participation of Belarus in the Eastern Partnership.

The ministry notes that there were certain difficult issues in bilateral relations “that both parties were seeking to resolve them in a spirit of compromise and mutual understanding”.
