European Commissioner Fuele: Relations of Belarus and EU are missed opportunities only

2

A session of the committee on international affairs has taken place in the European parliament.

It should be noted that it is one of the most influential bodies of the European Parliament. Its members are the former chairman of the parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering, a former Foreign Affairs Minister of Estonia Kristina Kristina Ojuland, such well-known politicians as Vytautas Landsbergis, Adrian Severin, Justas Paleckis, ucpb.org website reports.

It was a Lithuanian deputy Paleckis who showed concern to the situation in Belarus and asked the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fuele how the EU sees the further relations with the official Minsk, and what could be expected from the upcoming presidential elections.

Stefan Fuele noted that the EU is ready to meet Belarus halfway, however today one cannot speak about considerable positive steps in this direction on the part of the Belarusian authorities.

“Now the ball is in the court of the official Minsk, and we are ready to conduct a dialogue in all directions, including economic cooperation, facilitation of visa regime. However it should be stated that today the relations between the European Union and Belarus are missed opportunities only,” noted the European Commissioner.

Stefan Fuele has also informed that in the near future he plans a second visit to Minsk, however unlike presidents of some European countries, he is set to meet with representatives of the civil society, and not with Lukashenka.
