PACE rapporteur: a full-scale investigation of the Belarusian journalist’s death is necessary

The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly will keep a tab on the events taking place in Belarus on the threshold of presidential election.

The PACE rapporteur on Belarus Mrs Sinikka Hurskainen expressed her concern in connection with the death of the journalist Aleh Byabenin and called upon the Belarusian authorities to conduct a full-scale and transparent investigation of his death reasons.

“A question with regards of his death arises, and I hope, that the authorities will conduct a full-scale, transparent and profound investigation of this tragic case”, - Hurskainen said.

As BelaPAN was informed in PACE press-service, it is said in a special statement of the rapporteur.

Hurskainen marked, that PACE will keep a tab on the course of the investigation and on all the events taking place in Belarus on the threshold of presidential election. “In particular, the freedom of press and freedom of political rights of citizens are concerned”, — she underlined.

The PACE rapporteur expressed her deep condolences to Byabenin’s family and relatives.
