Security services haunting activists of European Belarus campaign

Activists of European Belarus civil campaign still face searches and repressions.

In the evening on January 31, police was searching the apartment of parents of Syarhei Kazakou, a European Belarus activist, for two hours. The police officers tried to convince his mother that her son was a criminal. According to them, they had a video showing him breaking glass in the House of Parliament. The police officer also said he admitted everything and denied services of a lawyer, the press service of European Belarus campaign informs.

Syarhei’s mother told she had met with a state lawyer, who previously appointed the meeting on Friday evening. The woman refused the services of the lawyer after the latter had said that the woman would have contacts with the son only through the lawyer. The lawyer added that all necessary things or food could be passed only through her.

On February 1, Syarhei’s mother met with a lawyer employed by human rights defenders.

We remind that Syarhei Kazakou was arrested on January 27 and placed in jail in Valadarski Street. He is under arrest now.

Another European Belarus activist, Alyaksei Syanchyla, found himself an object of haunting last Saturday. Two men in mufti came to his work and talked to managers. They were told Alyaksei had been dismissed. It was true, Alyaksei had voluntarily quitted the job. He learnt that some people were looking for him only when he came to take his documents. He received numerous calls to home. People introduced themselves as police officers and tried to found out his location. The fate of the activist is unknown.
