Yevgeny Yasin: Privatization in Belarus does not smell good

The story of Belarus is illustrative. The country suffered due to ignorance and obstinacy of the president, who, let’s be honest, is illegitimate.”

The research director of the Higher School of Economics, Yevgeny Yasin, commented on the situation in Belarus to Novaya Gazeta.

“The only one who could save the country and people from serious trials is Russia. It would have been strange if Russia had not done it. I do not know what the price is, but I think it was inevitable taking into account today’s distribution of political forces and congeniality of the two countries’ administrations.

I think Belarusians will fail to get an IMF loan because the IMF will put unacceptable for Lukashenka conditions. Usually, they offer conditions relating to institutions, reforms, tough monetary policy. It is far more difficult than obtaining a loan from Russia.

A new loan will not save the country, of course. They are in a situation when the catastrophe has burst and nothing will alter without serious changes like Gaidar’s reforms. We will throw huge money into the “furnace” from time to time. Or Lukashenka will have to take the advice of one of the voters, who said “Let’s change bold tire!” In my view, it is a very timely slogan.

Privatization of state assets worth 7 billion is not too much. But this step does not smell good now. Needless to say, we want to get something in exchange when we give our money. But I don’t admire the privatization again for the benefit of Russia.”
