The press service of the Bulgarian MFA told BelaPAN news agency that the country’s foreign minister, Nikolai Mladenov, had a meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Minsk last week.
The press service also confirmed that after the meeting, Mladenov had sent a letter to the EU High Representative on Foreign Affairs and Security Police, Catherine Ashton, and the EU foreign ministers. The information about the content of the letter, spread by media, is true, the press service notes.
Reuters released information about Mladenov’s letter on September 1. It was reported that Alyaksandr Lukashenka promised to free four political prisoners by this weekend, and drop charges from two convicted persons. The Belarusian president promised to free other political prisoners in early October.
The Bulgarian minister also informed Ashton about Lukashenka’s promise to hold round table talks with the opposition to discuss the country’s future with invitation of a “group of wise men” to observe and facilitate the negotiations.
The Embassy of Bulgaria in Minsk denied this information earlier.
