KGB takes revenge on activist’s family for refusal of “ratting”

Uladzimir Kumets, a press secretary of the “Revolution by social networks” campaign, has faced increased pressure from the secret services.

Investigator Dzyanis Sarkans told the activist’s parents last week a criminal case against his brother had been resumed.

“On September 23, 2011, I was arrested in my flat in Minsk. I was shown a ruling to open a criminal case against my brother for a homicide threat to an anonymous person on the Internet. I was detained as a suspect. Under threat of imprisonment of both my brother and me, I agreed to sign a declaration on collaboration with the KGB. I was not going to work for the KGB, I only did it to release my brother and leave the country. I was promised in the KGB the case would be closed and my family would be left in peace if I worked for them. I was deceiving them during October sending them fake reports I wrote with my colleague Vyachaslau Dziyanau. I got a task from the KGB to inform them about the civil campaign “Revolution by social networks”, discredit the Belarusian opposition forces and look for foreign sources of financing the Belarusian opposition. I suppose the disclosure of the details of the deal gave a reason for resuming the framed criminal case against my brother,” Uladzimir Kumets said.

Last week, investigator Sarkans called Uladzimir Kumets’s parents and said the criminal case against Uladzimir’s brother was resumed.

“I think resuming the criminal case against my brother and summoning my family members for questioning is revenge by the KGB for terminating collaboration with them in November,” the activist is convinced.
