EHU condemned the dismissal of the historian in Grodno

The senate of the European Humanities University adopted a resolution, condemning the decision of the Grodno State University to fire Andrei Charniakevich.

According to the version of the Grodno State University of Yanka Kupala, his dismissal was caused by “systematic violations of labour discipline”, the press-service of EHU reminds.

The university’s senate considers the decision a violation of academic freedom, which is unacceptable in modern Europe, and expresses its support to the historian, whose works received international recognition. Charniakevich is one of the authors of the recently published book “Grodnaznaustva”, which ends at the stage of Belarus’ independency acquisition and doesn’t include the period of the authoritarian Lukashenka regime’s formation.

Belarusian scientists and students, who express their critical attitude towards the existing authorities, often fall victims to sanctions and discrimination. Students are often being expelled from universities on a regular basis for expressing their position (according to the Observer organization’s data, starting from 2006 around 700 such cases took place).

In 2011 the Ministry of Education of Norway together with ten other European countries made a joint statement which expressed anxiety about academic freedom violations in Belarus.
