Lukashenka has expressed condolences to the relatives of executed Kanavalau and Kavalyou.

He stated that he sympathizes with the relatives of Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavalyou, who were executed on charges of committing a terrorist act in Minsk metro. Such a statement was made by the Belarusian leader in an interview to the Russian TV channel RT, Lenta.ru writes.

“For me, it was another tragedy in my life. Most of all, I empathized parents of these people I couldn’t help. Alas.” He added that it was difficult for him to deny one of the convicts in clemency.

However, according to Lukashenka, he could not act otherwise in this situation: “This is pure criminal act,” he said about the terrorist attacks for which Kanavalau and Kavalyou were convicted. “And moreover, it was a highly catastrophic criminal act, which is unforgiveable. I think Russia and other countries would have done the same.”

Lukashenka has also noted that over the period of his tenure as a president, he pardoned only one person sentenced to death penalty.

Lukashenka rejected claims that the trial was not held in accordance with the law. He noted that the trial was transparent and “all rules of procedures were conformed with”.

“The European Union had never asked me to put on hold the actuation of the death penalty upon these people. The European Union has always been demanding the death penalty abolition,” the Belarusian ruler added.

Last weekend it was reported that the sentence to Kanavalau and Kavalyou was carried out. Representatives of the EU responded to that with resentment. Earlier they urged the Belarusian leadership to stop legal killing. Commenting on the execution for terrorism, the EU once again urged the Belarusian authorities to set a moratorium on capital punishment.
