Passport control is really carried out at the Belarusian-Russian border.
The State Border Committee of Belarus has information about cases of passport control at the Belarusian-Russian border by Russian border guards, said deputy chairman of the State Border Committee Syarhei Barysyuk at a press-conference in Minsk on May 23.
“Customs authorities of Belarus do not carry out passport examination. At the same time, we hold information that border services of Russia recurrently carry out such measures at the Belarusian-Russian border,” BelaPAN was told by the deputy chairman of the State Border Committee.
However, Syarhei Barysyuk could not answer what are the reasons for that. “It is hard for me to comment on actions of the Border Service of Russia,” he noted.
The reports that passport control was resumed at the Belarusian-Russian border, was disseminated by some internet sources on May 22. Some witnesses who crossed the border between Belarus and Russia on that day, told that there was total passport examination and roads were locked by auto barriers. However it was not told who performed the control, police or border guards, and at what side, Russian or Belarusian.
On May 23 the spokesman of the Border Committee of Belarus Alyaksandr Tishchanka denied the information and told BelaPAN that the passport control was not resumed at the border between Belarus and Russia.
