Ecological disaster on the Neman River: Dead fish due to hydroelectric power station

40

Hundreds of dead fish were found last Friday in the Neman River upstream from Hrodna.

“A lot of fish – tenches, pikes, crucian carps and roaches – died in the old channel. I suppose it's because of the lack of oxygen in water. Plants began to rot producing toxic substances after the water level rose due to construction of a hydroelectric power station,” biologist Yury Tzydzik, who saw this upstream from the dam, says.

There have not been an official version of the mass fish deaths, Vecherny Grodno newspaper writes.

Dead fish was found in the river 700-800 metres upstream from the village of Shchatinava. A deputy head of the Hrodna regional inspection on fauna and flora protection, Yauheny Ashayeu, says a laboratory investigation is under way. Results will be announced this week.

Lithuania also has claims over construction of the hydroelectric power station. The Lithuanian MFA sent a note to Belarus over shallowing of the Neman.
