Lavrov promised to recognize Lukashenka’s "elections"

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that Russia will contribute to the development of an "objective and unbiased" evaluation of the "parliamentary" elections in Belarus.

"I can assure you, we will do everything possible for a fair and impartial assessment", - said S.Lavrov on Wednesday in Minsk during a meeting with Aliaxandar Lukashenka, reports "Interfax".

He stressed that this assessment should not be "a subject to unilateral, invented by someone, rules, which the OSCE try to force in spite of proposals to develop common rules for election observation".

At the same time Russian Foreign Minister said that at the level of heads of CIS states it was decided to increase the role of the mission of CIS observers at the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He explained that it is directed to strenghten the role of the CIS mission, which "should have more influence on these processes throughout Europe".

According to Lavrov, this will help to ensure that there is no monopoly of the OSCE in the assessment of elections, and it will be based on the evaluation of a balanced team approach.

"Russia will ensure participation of its citizens in various missions during the parliamentary elections in Belarus (will be held on September 23 - IF): OSCE, ODIHR OSCE, and, of course, the CIS mission", - said Sergey Lavrov.

However, he pointed out that the OSCE also understands that "it is necessary to restore order in this area".

In this regard, the Foreign Minister recalled the recent decision of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to conduct a comparative analysis of election laws of members of the organization and develop common criteria for evaluation of elections.

"What is important is the decision to move from a parliamentary level to an inter-governmental", - said Sergey Lavrov.
