Closed trial of Andrei Haidukou continues today

The trial against the activist is held in the Vitesbk regional court.

The trial is conducted by judge Halina Urbanovich.

The political prisoner's mother Volha Haidukova says witnesses will continue to give evidence today. She learnt the news from Andrei Haidukou's lawyers. Volha Haidukova was not summoned to a court as a witness. She was going to appear before the court on a summons. Now she says she will go to Vitebsk even if judges don't want to hear her evidence.

The trial of Andrei Haidukou began on June 12. KGB chief Valery Vakulchyk said the court hearings would be held behind closed doors. The case Andrei Haidukou is heard by the Vitebsk regional court. The opposition activist was transferred to Vitebsk on June 3. His relatives were denied a visit to him.

According to official information, Andrei Haidukou was detained when he was “installing a dead drop with information interesting for foreign secret services”. Human rights defenders and opposition activists find the accusation ridiculous.

The civil campaign European Belarus released a statement saying that the activist was detained for distributing Charter'97 newspapers. Human rights defenders link Andrei Haidukou's prosecution to his opposition views and explain it by attempt to scare young activists.
