Valiantsin Stefanovich: Lukashenka knows perfectly where Bialiatski is

That the ruler himself mentioned the political prisoner, may be linked to the talks that the Foreign Minister Makei had with European diplomats.

A human rights activist Valiantsin Stefanovich expressed such an assumption in an interview to the charter97.org web-site.

“That Lukashenka asked whether Bialiatski was released is cheap populism. He knows perfectly, where he is. It is not for the first time that Lukashenka says his name is public speeches, at the same time stating that the political prisoner is allegedly in custody for economic crimes. The same thing is being constantly told to international diplomats, the UN commission. At the same time the authorities know the real reasons for his arrest very well.

The issue of political prisoner, including Bialiatski, was raised during the meetings held by the Minister of Foreign Affairs with the EU member states ambassadors before the New Year’s. Probably, Lukashenka remembered him because this topic is constantly in the authorities’ hearing”, - Valiantsin Stefanovich said.

The human rights activist is sure that the authorities will have to release the political prisoners for the sake of the normalization of the relations with the EU.

“As the experience of 2008 and 2011 shows, political prisoners may be released even without beating a pleas for pardon out of them. And the authorities realize that they will anyway have to solve this problem”, - he stated.

The human rights activist also commented on the ruler’s words, which he said in response to the question about the tortures in police departments and KGB.

“The enforcing agencies, Ministry of Interior – are a closed system, it is impossible to receive any information from there. It is not a secret that people are being tortured there, even considering that people are afraid to tell about this. Nevertheless, only within the past year several cases became known – two in the Lenin district’s police department, Vitebsk. We may also recollect the case in Belynichy, where a lawyer managed to prove the use of tortures during the investigation, the testimonies of political prisoners.

The guilty of those crimes were not held responsible, that is why Lukashenka’s words that these questions should be addressed to the Prosecutor General, do not mean anything. The lack of information, the closeness bring about impunity and the consequence of impunity is permissiveness”, - Valiantsin Stefanovich stated.

We would remind that during a press-conference today Lukashenka remembered Ales Bialiatski himself left question about tortures practically unanswered.
