Human rights activist Andrei Bandarenka may face criminal prosecution

A criminal case may be initiated against Andrei Bandarenka over “defamation of police officers”.

In February 2013, news websites reported about torturing Bahdan and Ivan Shkurko in a police department in Lida.

Larysa Shkurko, the mother of Ivan and Bahdan, gave an interview and said what had happened to her sons in early hours of 18 February 2012, Platform website informs.

The reaction from the law-enforcement bodies was quick but strange. Instead of launching an unbiased internal investigation, Lida police decided to accused Andrei Bandarenka of defamation.

Andrei Bandarenka was surprised to learn some days ago that police of the  town of Kirausk (the Mahilou region), where he is officially registered, were looking for him. Policemen didn't send a summons, but just called Andrei's fathers and asked him to tell his son that he should appear in the police department.

Andrei Bandarenka didn't visit the police department and Kirau police sent the documents back to Lida.

It has become known that a criminal case over “defamation of police officers” may be initiated against Andrei Bandarenka.
