Jacek Saryusz-Wolski: Paletskis may write anything

The situation with human rights has not changed in Belarus, the MEP believes.

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski does not agree with the assessments made by the European Parliament delegation’s reporter on Belarus, Radio Racyja reports. The parliamentarian has not yet read Justas Paletskis’ report, but he unambiguously claims that the situation with human rights in Belarus is bad.

“The situation with human rights in Belarus has not changed, which means it is bad. Nothing has changed, there are still political prisoners, opposition’s opportunities for action are limited, everything remains as it was. He may write what he deems necessary, anything, but this does not mean that this is European Parliament’s position”, - Jacek Saryusz-Wolski said.

We would remind that European Parliament delegation’s reporter on Belarus has claimd that in 2012 there was a “discernible improvement of the situation of human rights” and “the European Dialogue on Modernization with Belarusian society launched in 2012 had a positive impact on the development of civil society in Belarus”. Based on that he suggested to increase contacts with Belarusian officials, prepare a “roadmap” for developing a dialogue with official Minsk, including inter-parliament relations,  consider the suspension of key officials from the EU visa ban list with the view to broadening the main and essential diplomatic communication channel with Belarus.

These recommendations are in the report, prepared by Paletskis and published on European Parliament’s web-site.

The draft report was received by Justas Paletskis’ colleagues in the European Parliament. MEPs have a right to introduce their amendments to the document until 5 June.
