Cleanup at market in Pinsk (Video)

Pinsk police organized a raid against pensioners, who were selling foodstuff.

The city’s elderly people have long been selling vegetables and fruit, grown at their own household plots, as well as berries and mushrooms near the entrance to the mini-market Zapadny. Policemen used to prevent that earlier too, but they would come to nothing more than chasing the traders away or warning them about the responsibility for trading at an undue place. However, on Sunday 7 July they organized an actual cleanup of the territory near the marketplace.

Police acted with a particular cruelty. People were forced into cars, and the bags with products that they were selling were thrown on the ground. Pensioners had their arms twisted, they were beaten, pulled by the hair, their clothes were being torn. According to the witnesses, around 10 people were detained altogether.

The incident got public’s attention. People, who gathered around the mini-market, loudly expressed their indignation and tried to protect the pensioners. Many were filming the actions of the policemen on their mobile phones.

The fate of the detained is unknown. At Pinsk’s police department they told the charter97.org web-site that police sometimes provided guidance on the inadmissibility of illegal street trade. At the same time they claimed at the police department, that no one was detained on 7 July in the Zapadny market area.
