Return of Kalinowski

Memorial plaque commemorating Kalinowski relocated to another place.

A memorial plaque commemorating Belarusian national resistance hero Kastus Kalinowski, which disappeared from a wall of the Palace of Wrestling on Kalinowski Street in Minsk earlier this week, has been put up on another wall of the building.

The administration of the Palace of Wrestling explained to activists of an opposition youth organization called Alternatyva (Alternative) that the plaque had been removed to be displayed more prominently.

The plaque was unveiled in 1988 and stolen 10 years later. In July this year, the plaque was put back on what formerly was the Vilnius movie theater. As Alyaksey Kashtalyan, deputy head of the Pershamayski district administration, told the Belarus Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, after the plaque was eventually found, it was decided to return it to its original place after the renovation of the building, which was to be converted into the Palace of Wrestling.
