Customs officers are ready to toll shopping fee

The State Customs Committee has claimed it is ready to toll the exit fee in Belarus.

“If a respective decision is taken by Belarus’ decision-making authority, customs authorities will follow within the competency defined by the decision”, - the State Customs Committee’s deputy chairman Siarhej Barysiuk said at a press-conference in Minsk on Wednesday, Interfax reports.

He explained that the tariffs are set by respective bodies, and the customs office tolls them. “A customs officer detects cargo under the control of this or that service and then sends the cargo’s owner to the respective services”, - the SCC’s deputy chairman stated.

According to Barysiuk, “altogether this year 20 million 774 individuals crossed the state border this year, out of which 12 million 536 thousand people were of Belarusian citizenship”. He noted that there was no separate statistics on how many citizens went to the European Union countries.

We would remind that on 6 September Aliaksandr Lukashenka suggested introducing a fee for Belarusians going shopping abroad. During his visit to Motovelo public corporation he claimed: “We are criticized for being a poor country, while our people take up to $3 billion a year abroad to the European Union and bring back the goods, that we too produce. “I have long ordered to develop measures against that, up to setting a fee for going abroad. This will be like the following: we provide you with services at the border – you pay $100 a head and go abroad”, - Lukashenka said.
