New criminal case opened over “insulting” Lukashenka

The case was opened for the question “For how long will judges fulfil criminal orders of mentally ill citizen Lukashenka?”

Katsiaryna Sadouskaya, a 68-year-old pensioner and former political prisoner, will be tried.

A charter97.org correspondent reports that Katsiaryna Sadouskaya was informed on June 26 that a criminal case over part 2 of article 368 of the Criminal Code (insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus) had been opened against her. The case was initiated by chief of the Savetski district committee of the Investigation Committee major of justice Ahafonau.

On April 28, 2014, when preventive arrests ahead of the Ice Hockey World Championship began, former political prisoner Aliaksandr Frantskevich was detained and taken into custody. Sadouskaya wrote on the book of complaints in Minsk's Savetski district court: “For how long will judge fulfil criminal orders of mentally ill citizen Lukashenka?”

Article 368. Insult of the President of the Republic of Belarus:

1. Insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus in public is punished with a fine, or community services of up to two years, or a term of arrest of up to six months, or restriction of liberty of up to two years, or imprisonment for the same period.

The same action committed by a person with previous convictions for insulting or defaming, or in addition to charges of committing a serious or a very serious crime is punished with a fine, or community services of up to two years, or restriction of liberty of up to three years, or imprisonment for the same period.

Katsiaryna Sadouskaya was born in Homel on January 28, 1946. He worked at the radiator plant, as tram driver, in the utilities company.

She became a human rights activist in 1988.

In June 2005, Katsyaryna Sadouskaya was charged with insulting a judge and the head of state. The KGB intercepted her letter to a Russian colleague. In her letter, she wrote about a diagnosis to Lukashenka made in the early 2000s by psychiatrist Dzmitry Shchyhelski, who had moved to the US.

The case was suspended due to the disease of the defendant, but Katsyaryna was taken to a psychiatric hospital just after an operation. She was later transferred to a detention facility. On October 23, 2006, Sadouskaya was sentenced to two years of imprisonment for insulting Lukashenka and the judge. She served her term in a women's correctional facility in Homel. She was released on May 25, 2007, in accordance with the decision of the prison administration and the court.
