“Chamber” representatives refused to meet with PA OSCE delegation

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Belarus could not manage to hold a meeting with the official Belarusian delegation.

BelaPAN has been informed about that by the head of the working group, the Swedish deputy of the OSCE PA Christian Holm.

Unfortunately, the meeting had not taken place, he said. “I hope that we would to be able to hold meaningful meetings in the framework of the future OSCE PA sessions,” he stressed.

As said by him, Viktar Huminski, the head of the Belarusian delegation, deputy chairman of the “chamber of representatives” of the “national assembly” of Belarus, answered to the invitation to hold a meeting. “He said he sees no sense in holding meetings with such a working group,” Mr Holm noted.

“I suppose the reason is he does not think we are constructive enough. I regret that. In no small measure we wanted to discuss the geopolitical situation in connection with the aggressive actions of Russia,” Holm said.

As an organisation engaged in human rights issues and democracy, election monitoring, they obviously could not overlook discussing these topics, he said. But it would be useful to focus on the topics in which there are common interests, in particular, on the issue of preserving sovereignty of Belarus, he added.

Mr Holm expresses the hope that a meeting of the OSCE PA Ad Hoc Working group on Belarus and the official Belarusian delegation is yet to come, and representatives of the civil society and political opposition of Belarus are to attend it as well. The deputy promises to send invitations to the Belarusian delegation in the future. We remind that the OSCE PA session is held in Baku on June 28 – July 2. The officials of Belarus on numerous occasions said that there is no need for the existence of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Ad Hoc Working Group on Belarus.
