Prosecutor General’s Office does not comment on possible arrest of Belneftekhim head

There is no information about whereabouts of Igor Zhilin since last Tuesday.

“We do not comment on that for the present,” charter97.org was told by representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus. To the clarification question whether a comment on the topic cold be obtained from the Investigative Committee of Belarus, the representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office said: “No, as we do not comment on that for the present.”

The press-service of Belneftechim told to charter97.org that “they do not know where Zhilin is and how to get in touch with him.” The first deputy chairman of the concern Igor Lyashenko is appointed to his position temporarily.

There is no news about the whereabouts of the 73-year-old head of the Belarusian state concern for oil and chemistry since July 1.

Igor Zhilin was released from his position by the decree of the government #631 dated by June 30, 2014. The text of the decree became available at the website of the National Centre of Legal Information of Belarus on July 3 in the night. It is remarkable that the reason of dismissal is not indicated in the decree.

Back on July 1 the head of Belneftekhim congratulated employees of the concern on the Day of the Repulic.

On July 2 a source of charter97.org informed that Igor Zhilin was arrested on July 1 and placed to a pretrial detention centre.

Igor Zhilin, a citizen of Russia, was appointed to the position of the head of the concern on February 4, 2011. Earlier he headed Grodno Azot joint-stock company. Many people believed this appointment took place thanks to push given by the late oligarch Boris Berezovsky.

Experts name Igor Zhilin an inventor of the scheme of Russian oil products’ smuggling and a scandal with breach of relations between “Belaruskali” and “Uralkali”, as a result of which Uralkali CEO Vladislav Baumgertner was imprisoned in Belarus.

A month and a half ago the former Zhilin’s assistant Vladimir Volkov was sentenced to 8 years in a penal colony with a reinforced regime. The former chief of “Belneftekhim” was demanded to give evidence against members of the government.
