Lithuania refutes Makei's remarks

Lithuania does not confirm the remark by the Belarusian foreign minister, who said Vilnius had finally approved the construction of the nuclear power station in Astravets.

“Belarus's proposal on seeking a compromise on the construction of the nuclear power station, the project Lithuania has been opposing strongly, has finally been accepted after several months,” Belarusian foreign minister Uladzimir Makei said on the air of STV television channel on Sunday.

The Belarusian foreign minister said the topic had been discussed during the visit of his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevicius to Minsk last week. Makei said some problems still remained on the agenda.

“But what is the most important is that we see the readiness for a dialogue and willingness to solve these problems through a dialogue,” he said.

However, Lithuania does not conform these remarks by the Belarusian minister. The Lithuanian MFA says that the parties discussed only ways and methods of receiving information and answers to the questions Lithuania may have in connection to the security of the NPS in Astravets, ru.DELFI.lt reports with a link to BNS news agency.

The Lithuanian MFA notes the country still thinks the construction of nuclear energy facilities should be carried out "in compliance with the highest standards of nuclear safety and security, as well as in line with requirements of relevant international conventions”.
