Maryna Adamovich: I’m perplexed

The wife of Mikalai Statkevich, a political prisoner, who is in prison for more than 3.5 years, is surprised by the visit of the EU and Ukraine leaders to Minsk.

Maryna Adamovich has said that to charter97.org website.

- Representatives of the EU and the president of Ukraine arrived to the yesterday’s summit in Minsk. As the initiator of this meeting, Lukashenka is called “a democrat as compared to Putin” by some media, and he actively uses that for marketing himself. At the same time, your husband, like other political prisoners, is in prison for a long time. What are your feelings about the new line of character of the dictator?

- I try not to take such things emotionally, as this event as such just perplexes s me. In my view, aggressors cannot dictate their conditions to the world community. Luckily, I had not read the media that present Lukashenka as a democratic leader. Obviously, these media are something like BelTA (Belarusian official state news agency). Undoubtedly, I expected some hint from the European Union, which would show that Belarus was just used as a place for holding talks which satisfies all the sides. Something of the kind was heard before the meeting, but I cannot say that it makes me happy, as I am taken aback by the format itself.

I can understand Poroshenko’s motives as for Lukashenka’s proposal to provide the place for this meeting. I can understand motives of other sides of the talks. But I cannot say that I accept that. I haven’t expected effect from this kind of a meeting, and I cannot understand how it is possible to talk to an aggressor.

We remind that Mikalai Statkevich is the only former presidential candidate, who is still in prison. Statkevich had been sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment for alleged orchestrating mass riots after the election of December 19, 2010, which results were rigged. Mikalai Statkevich is held in the closed Mahilyou prison.
