Mass detentions at Freedom Day rally in Minsk

The police detained more than ten participants of the rally, including activists of European Belarus civil campaign.

Some of them will be tried.

Viasna human rights centre reports that activists of European Belarus civil campaign Maksim Viniarski, Siarhei Makoits, Alena Lazarchyk, Uladz Barodka and Leanid Kulakou were detained. They carried the banner “Death to Kremlin occupants” at the rally.

Aliaksei Markouski, an activist of the Young Democrats, is reported to have been detained at a bus stop.

The activists were taken to the Savetski district police department.

Activisrts of the anarchist movement are reported to have been detained, but there are no details. The police blocked some participants of the rally in a block of flats in Bahdanovich Street human rights defenders say.

Seven activists with flags and the Columns of Gediminas coat of arms, as well as Young Front members, including Stanislau Rachkel, were detained.

Most of the activists were set free late in the evening. Some of the activists, among them coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign Maksim Viniarski, were charged with disorderly conduct. The activists will be tried on Wednesday.
