Investigative Committee investigates attempt to hijack Belavia aircraft

The Investigative Committee has initiated proceedings in the criminal case, an attempt to hijack a Belavia aircraft by a citizen of Georgia.

The Investigative Committee of Belarus has adopted the case against the citizen of Georgia, born in 1973, who is a suspect in hijacking Kutaisi-Minsk passenger aircraft of Belavia Company on 10 June. БелаПАН has been informed about that by an official representative of the Investigative Committee Yuliya Hancharova.

Pursuant to case materials, the passenger demanded the crew to change course to one of European countries, threatening by violence. He told about that in a written meaasge sent to the captain.

He was detained by KGB officers at the territory of the national airport of Minsk.

The criminal case against the citizen of Georgia was opened on charges relating Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 311 of the Criminal Code. The suspect was taken into custody.

We remind that the criminal case against the citizen of Georgia was initiated by the KGB (the State Security Committee of Belarus).

The Investigative Committee takes steps to carry out full, in-depth and objective investigation of the facts of the crime. A number of expert examinations are to take place.

“This incident is the first one on the history of modern Belarus and it demonstrates that the level of accidents prevention provided by the national airline carrier is rather high,” Yuliya Hancharova noted.
