Ministry of Communication bothers about profit of Skype and Viber

The monetisation of Skype and Viber in the networks of Belarusian communication operators will be discussed by the end of June.

The interaction between communication operators and Skype, Viber and similar services will be discussed by the end of June at a meeting of the Public Consultative (expert) Council for Business Development at the Ministry of Communication and Informatisation, BelTA reports.

At the previous meeting, the Council discussed the monetisation of certain services that use telecommunication networks. It is reported that the necessary regulating instruments have not been worked out in the world, but many countries take similar actions. “We exchanged our views over proposing unified approaches and the most suitable position on the issue in Belarus/ taking into account the international experience,” the Ministry of Communication says.

Representatives of the ministry think that looking for compromises and reaching a balance between telecommunication operators that bear the growing costs for the infrastructure maintenance and development and external service providers that use network resources to give their clients access to services (such as Skype and Viber) are necessary to keep the high rate of development of information and communication technologies.

Siarhei Papkou, the minister of communication and informatiosation, earlier said the ministry wanted to get profit from Skype and Viber.
