Belarus' number one Victoria Azarenka, ranked 20th, progressed into the US Open round three after defeating World No.92 Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 7-5, 6-4 on 3 September.

Down 4-5 in the first set Victoria Azarenka broke the Belgian player, held and then broke Yanina Wickmayer again to win the first set. In the second set, the Belarusian overcame 12 unforced errors to win and advance on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match lasted 105 minutes.

Azarenka will next face No. 11 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany. The Belarusian is 4-0 against the German player. This year the two players met in Doha where Azarenka celebrated a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Elsewhere, Belarus' Olga Govortsova, ranked 68th, lost her second-round match to No. 53 seed Mona Barthel of Germany 6-2, 2-6, 4-6. Now the Belarusian would focus on the women's doubles event where she and Ukraine's Lesya Tsurenko advanced to round two.

Victoria Azarenka was the US Open runner-up twice (in 2012 and 2013).

In the men's doubles Alexander Bury of Belarus and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin topped Radu Albot of Moldova and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the opener. Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Spain's Feliciano Lopez lost their opening match to the American tandem of Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky 6-7 (4-7), 5-7. Belarus' Sergei Betov and Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain lost to the Ukrainian-French duo of Sergei Stakhovsky and Lukas Pouille 6-7 (2-7), 4-6.

Max Mirnyi of Belarus will continue his US Open run in the mixed doubles event where he paired with Australia's Anastasia Rodionova beat the Romanian tandem of Anda Perianu and Andrei Daescu 6-2, 6-4 in the opener. Max Mirnyi has three US Open mixed doubles titles on his record: with Serena Williams of the United States in 1998, Victoria Azarenka in 2007 and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in 2013.

The US Open prize money for 2015 will make up $42.3 million. Winners in the men's and women's singles will get $3.3 million each, while finalists will earn $1.6 million each. The doubles champions will get $570,000 each, while the finalists will earn $275,000 each. The season's final Grand Slam tournament finishes on 13 September.
