Once Again EU Urged Belarus To Impose Moratorium On Death Penalty

In connection with the new sentence of death, the European Union once again urged the authorities of Belarus to impose a moratorium on death penalty.

In the statement of Maja Kocijancic, Spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS), published on the official website of the EU mission in Belarus, it is stressed that the legal right to appeal should be fully guaranteed to Henadz Yakavitski, who is sentenced to death, BelaPAN writes.

“Mr Yakavitski was convicted of a serious crime and we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim,” – the document reads.

At the same time it is stressed that the European Union “is opposed to capital punishment in all cases and without exception.”

“We urge Belarus, the only country in Europe still applying capital punishment, to join a global moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its abolition. Commuting the sentences of persons sentenced to death and launching a public debate on the death penalty with Belarusian society would be an important move in this regard,” – the document reads.

On January 5 the Minsk Regional Court pronounced the death sentence in the case of Henadz Yakavitski. He was found guilty of a murder committed with extreme cruelty. According to the prosecution, he killed his common-law wife. It also turned out that Yakavitski has been sentenced to a death penalty in the times of the Soviet Union, however he managed to appeal against the verdict, and shooting was replaced by a long term of imprisonment.
