The event was traditionally organized by Vitsebsk Belarusian Language Society and the movement For Freedom. This year, writer’s sister Valiantsina Bykava couldn’t take part in the celebration. She is in the Vitsebsk Regional Hospital intensive care. Three weeks ago, a nearly 90-year-old Bykau’s sister was attacked in her home by an unknown assaulter, Valiantsina’s arm and several ribs were fractured. Doctors say her condition is still severe.

The prize "For Freedom of Thought" has existed since 2008, famous poets Ryhor Baradulin and Nil Hilevich, writer Uladzimir Arlou, writers and politicians Uladzimir Nyaklyaeu and Pavel Seviarynets, artist Ales Pushkin, Ales Marachkin, historians Ada Raychonak and Aliaksandr Belakoz, musician Liavon Volski, singer-bards Zmitser Vaitsiushkevich and Viktar Shalkevich were awarded the laureate title.

Persons, who have most clearly manifested themselves in the social, professional and artistic activities for the benefit of Belarus and freedom, are traditionally chosen as winners of the “For Freedom of Thought” Prize. Each winner is awarded a commemorative diploma and a prize – a sculpture by Viktar Kopach.
