Ex-Presidents Of Lithuania Urged Not To Buy Electric Energy From Belarus

Valdas Adamkus and Vytautas Landsbergis demand to stop construction of the nuclear power plant in Astravets.

Their address to the government has been also signed by the head of the oppositional party the Homeland Union– Lithuanian Christian Democrats Gabrielius Landsbergis, the leader of the oppositional Lithuanian Liberal Movement Eligijus Masiulis and the chairman of the Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union Ramūnas Karbauskis, Delfi.lt informs.

“In accordance with the progress schedule, the Belarusian nuclear power plant is planned to be connected in three years. The unsafe station is to be connected to the existing power supply lines, which have already been brought to Visaginas, and to those which are planned to reach Kruonis, so that the electricity produced there is to flood our country uncontrollably and with all kind of economic and political consequences,” – the address reads.

It is stressed that in this case Lithuania would not only become politically dependent on this unsafe energy supplier, but by its money for energy is to finance the project, potentially dangerous and even fatal for Lithuania.

“By not allowing the electric energy from Astravets into Lithuania and by not buying it, and also by not allowing using reserve capacities of the electric power system of Lithuania, we could create formidable barriers for the executors of the project, to make its implementation and financial viability more difficult. Understanding that, we address the government of Lithuania and at the same time all international organisations with a demand to do everything in power to stop construction of the Belarusian NPP in Astravets immediately,” – the address reads.

As stated in the document, in this way the Lithuanian government should prevent the electricity, produced at the Belarusian NPP, from getting to Lithuania or being conducted through Lithuania, and its sales at the Lithuaniain market.
