Lithuania Received Strange Inquiry From Belarus

The Minsk claim for information about the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant is connected with the Vilnius inquiries on the construction of the Belarusian NPP.

This was stated by representative of the Lithuanian Ministry of Environment Vitalijus Auglis, Delfi reports.

“We’ve got an e-mail letter, let’s see what they are asking for. They create a tit-for-tat case. If we ask for something, then they have a look at what we have. It is fully connected with the Astravets issue. They try to balance it,” – said director of the Environment Protection Department of the Ministry of Environment Vitalijus Auglis.

According to him, the issue of INPP cannot be tied to the issues of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, since the station is being closed in Lithuania, and it’s under construction in Belarus.

On October 18, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Belarus reported that Minsk had direct inquiries to Vilnius regarding the information on the alleged problems, encountering during the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant.

The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant worked for 26 years and was stopped on 31 December 2009. It is located a few kilometers from the Belarusian border.

Lithuania consistently criticizes the construction of the Belarusian NPP in Astravets near its border.
