The Regime's Power Is About to Run Dry

The Regime's Power Is About to Run Dry
Mikalai Statkevich

The Belarusians should make their power stolen 20 years ago back.

The leader of the Belarusian opposition and ex-candidate for presidential elections - 2010 Mikalai Statkevich wrote on Facebook.

20 years ago the Belarusian people was stolen the power from. It was made by a person who was entrusted the main state position. If someone considers that an economic dead end and poverty are the main negative result of his activity, one is stunningly mistaken.

Every society has many challenges. The democracy allows to negotiate divisive issues. Consensus searching mechanism is well-known. People with different views and interests elect their representatives to the Parliament. Then deputies search consensus that could somehow satisfy major groups of the society.

Sometimes it takes much time and efforts. It may cause disputes and even fights - like it happens in southern countries with their especially emotional deputies who fight for interests of those who put them on the position - their voters.

The Belarusian media gladly shows it to make us observe what this democracy may lead to. And here we have stability and order.

The same state is typical for a cemetery. The only difference is that people there are all dead.

This TV propaganda wants us not to notice the absence of the Parliament in Belarus. Puppets cannot represent the Parliament. Our "parliament" has no real power, a Lukashenka's decree stands above adopted laws.

And even if appointed "deputies" wanted to protect interests of voters, their laws would be easily overtaken by a ruler's decree.

Such scenario has been valid since November 24, 1996, the day when the whole power was illegally surrendered to hands of one person. To say nothing of that "referendum".

20 years ago the Belarusian people were deprived of the consensus searching mechanism between groups of the society. Such mechanism is required not only by social groups - entrepreneurs, employees, workers, pensioners, peasants, but by people with different political views.

For example, more than 90% of Belarusians want to live in their own independent state. Some of them see their future in the European Union, others see their way with Russia, and the rest - beyond any unions. In a normal democratic country foreign policy development is determined by the Parliament. Deputies representing interests of voters with different points of views seek a compromise.

This opportunity was stolen from us 20 years ago. Now when the society is suppressed by the regime, the situation is allegedly positive. But the regime is getting weak and its time is about to run out. What will happen if the chain "breaks"? How is it possible to avoid social upheaval?

There are some people who do not see the country independent. Some of them even fought for accession of the Donbas to Russia. They have people to assist them with weapons. And let the violin play. It only needs to pull the trigger. Many people know what a war may do to the people. Just take a look at Ukraine.

Not to let it happen in Belarus, the Belarusians must learn to negotiate. First, they need to make the thing stolen from them back - the true Parliament with its fairly elected representatives who decide upon the way the country should follow. It's better them to have disputes or even fights than people start killing each other in the streets.

The country's geopolitical choice should not be decided in Squares, this is a matter for the fairly elected Parliament. Not to let social upheaval occur, the Belarusians should make their power stolen 20 years ago back.

Dictatorships lead to wars.

The rally devoted to 20th anniversary of the anti-constitutional coup starts on November 24, 6 pm, Svabody Square, Minsk. We will never accept the seizure of power by one person.

Power to the people!
