BPF Youth Collect Signatures For Bykau and Karatkevich Streets In Homel

Activists call upon all citizens of Belarus to write electronic or written appeals to the city authorities.

The BPF youth started collecting signatures for naming Homel streets in honor of Vasil Bykau and Uladzimir Karatkevich, Radio Svaboda reports.

The Belarus-1 TV channel reported on December 3 that Vasil Bykau and Uladzimir Karatkevich streets appeared in the former workers' settlement Kastsiukouka, which has officially become one of the districts of Homel this year.

But on December 7, the sites removed this information, as it did not correspond to reality. In fact the Homel streets had got completely different names.

"Starting with December 8, we begin collecting signatures for naming new streets in honor of Vasil Bykau and Uladzimir Karatkevich, as we consider them to be worthy representatives of our country, which are known far beyond its borders. We will conduct the collection of signatures, because we are very ashamed of the fact that Homel still hasn’t got streets in honor of Bykau and Karatkevich," –the head of Homel branch of the Youth of BPF Artsiom Kasavarau said.

Activists call upon all citizens of Belarus, Homel residents above all others, to write electronic or written appeals to the Homel Board of Deputies, requesting to name new streets in honor of Vasil Bykau and Uladzimir Karatkevich.

Representatives of the BPF Youth in Gomel intend to appeal to the city authorities and find out when the public discussions took place and why there was no information about them.

"And after that we will try to initiate new public hearings, as the local authorities’ attitude to the case is unacceptable," – members of the organization said.
