“White-Red-White Car” Returned To Activist

17

The policemen failed to explain to Yauhen Batura why they had taken the car firsthand.

Civil activist Yauhen Batura was detained without explanations on June 23 in the Independence Avenue, where the action of solidarity with Eduard Palchys took place. The traffic police officers stopped his “White-Red-White Car”, decorated with the white-red-white flags and stickers, put him into the police car and delivered to the Maskouski district police department. The car was later catalogued – the policemen claimed that it had allegedly been hijacked, Radio Svaboda reports.

However, they returned the car on July 1, with no official explanations.

“No version, no papers, no documents,” - Yauhen Batura says. “The car was in the Maskouski district police department, they gave it back and that’s it. Some policeman came over, we drove up to the expertise in my car, he returned the technical passport and left. I gave my car in for the expertise myself. They checked it and said, we see, there can be nothing bad there, just go. The whole procedure took 10 minutes. Nothing changed as for flags and stickers. The only thing is, I need to make sure they hadn’t planted anything in the car, everything can happen. They touched the things, this is the only issue that bothers me.

I will struggle further; I want the case to proceed to the court, as I have all the necessary proofs. The lawyer saw the fake report, and that there was no protocol of confiscation in the case, not even a fake one. I filed complaints to the public prosecutor’s office and to the city administration of internal affairs – I filed four complaints so that they would explain the reason for taking my car, and punish the guilty.”

The “White-Red-White Car” action, conducted by Art-Siadziba, has started on June 16. Art-Siadziba offers to place white-red-white flags on cars, which is not prohibited by any rules or laws. The police stopped owners of the “White-Red-White Cars” at least three times in two weeks.

We remind, unknown people stole the white-red-white flags from the car belonging to “European Belarus” activist Leanid Kulakou while he was in the Central district police department of Minsk, detained by traffic policemen back on June 21.
