The Astravets NPP is being built with numerous and serious violations.

The Deputy Minister of Energy has admitted that there have been 10 accident at the Astravets NPP construction. 3 people have died, the reactor vessel is to be replaced. In addition, there are numerous debates over the issue of the nuclear power plant construction.

Ecologist Tatsiana Novikava told Belsat about the Astravets NPP construction.

– Tatsiana, being an expert, you know what consequences for the environment a construction of a nuclear power plant can carry. Suffice it to recall, that you were a member of the governmental commission, which decided to suspend the research in the nuclear energy field in Belarus for 10 years. Nevertheless, the construction is in full swing and it is associated with scandals. And the reactor vessel, which fell to the ground, is not the main point, but the place, where the construction is carried out.

– Experts recognized this site inappropriate in 1994. Academy of Sciences member Mikhalevich, who put his signature on the document, was among those experts. That is, the site is uncongenial, it has been poorly examined. The infrastructure construction for the nuclear power plant was started in 2009. And in 2010, the environmental impact assessment was ready, which stated that the geological research of the site had not been yet completed.

That is, the site prospecting was completed later than the construction was started.

It’s also bad that the site is in close vicinity to Vilnius. Vilnius is a large city, the capital of the neighboring state. And 40 kilometers from Vilnius suburbs to the station is a very small distance. By any definition, the site is unsuitable and dangerous.

– Journalists have been told about violations of technological norms, numerous accidents, emergencies. Three deaths have been reported, but people say that there have been more. What's really going on?

– The construction of the first unit of the reactor building started on May 31, 2012, when there was no preliminary design.

Yesterday, Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadiuk said at a joint press conference with the Lithuanian side that there had been only 10 accidents and only 3 deaths. This is, in my opinion, a cynical statement, as we are aware of a larger number of victims.

For example, I know that a record-keeper has died at the site this year. She died under the wheels of a truck. This is in addition to the three cases listed by Mikhadiuk. According to our data, more people have died. The fact, that the Ministry of Energy has no information about these cases, states, that the investigation on these cases have not been conducted. There are numerous and serious violations.
