Day Of Belarusian Military Glory Marked Today

On September 8, 1514 the army of the Great Duchy of Lithuania battered the 80-thousand army of Moscovia.

The unofficial Day of the Belarusian Military Glory is celebrated on September 8 – the glorious Battle of Vorsha took place on that day, when the 30-thousand army of the Great Duchy of Lithuania headed by Grand Hetman Kanstancin Astrožski defeated the 80-thousand army of Moscovia.

Several festive events dedicated to the 502nd anniversary of the victory of the Belarusian arms will be held this year in Minsk.

Since early morning, the photo exhibition showing how the Day of the Belarusian Military Glory was celebrated in the 90s of the XX century in the Belarusian capital will start working at the office of the Belarusian Popular Front (Charnysheuski Street, 3, Minsk). The exhibition has been prepared by the Center of the Civil Society Studies basing on the materials of photographer Uladzimir Sapahou, who passed away four years ago.

The BPF party will also hold a festive demonstration today. The action starts at 6 p.m. in front of the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre at the address of the Paris Commune Square, 1.

In the framework of the action, historians will tell about the significance of the victory near Vorsha, politicians and civil activists will give assessment to the current threats of the national security of Belarus, and Belarusian bards will perform.

The action does not require special permission from the authorities, in connection with holding of the so-called “elections” in the country.

The “Young Front” activists call on the people to join them for the action named “You Got It Hot Under Vorsha, You’ll Get It Hot Under Vetka!” at 6 p.m. near the Russian Embassy in Minsk.

As leader of the “Young Front” Zmitser Dashkevich has told Radio Liberty, the name of the action is explained by the fact that “the Belarusian district center Vetka is located near the Russian border, and the Russian troops are being pulled up at the Russian side in that very area.”

“The victory of the Belarusian arms in 1514 suspended the imperial rage of Moscow for many decades to come. 500 years after the defeat near Vorsha Moscow will get hungry for blood and the neighboring lands again. The words of the Belarusian hero Kastus Kalinouski remain as timely as ever today: “My people! You will only live happily when there is no Moscovite above you!” That is why we are calling for celebrating the 502nd anniversary of the battle of Vorsha – the Day of the Belarusian Military Glory! Let us remind Russia what it will face in case it tries to realize its imperial complexes here in Belarus,” – Zmitser Dashkevich has said.

On September 6, the “Young Front” activists carried out a performance – they dag trenches in the woods. “We decided to hold an action which would demonstrate that the Belarusian borders should be defended from the East firsthand,” – Zmitser Dashkevich has stated.

The website charter97.org congratulates its readers on the Day of the Belarusian Military Glory, wishing that the heroic example of our ancestors would inspire Belarusians to fight for freedom and independence.
