People need to know the truth about what is happening in the country.
Leanid Kulakou, an activist of the European Belarus civil campaign stated that, congratulating Charter'97 on the 20th anniversary.
"Dear Charter! From the bottom of the heart I congratulate all the team on your anniversary. It is you who are known, honored and read in all countries of the world. And the people of Belarus need only you, so that they would learn the whole truth about what is happening in the country.

On November 10, 1997, the Charter'97 document was published, which stated that the Belarusians "won’t tolerate arbitrariness, violation of laws, crimes against the entire people and individual persons committed by the authorities, and are ready to fight for their rights and freedoms together, for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law in the country." The document was the starting point in the history of the initiative. About 100 country’s most famous politicians, public and cultural figures, journalists signed the text first. Later the document was signed by more than 100 000 citizens of Belarus.
