Ivonka Survila: Let Us Recall Our Heroes With Gratitude

Chairperson of the Belarusian People’s Republic Rada Ivonka Survila has congratulated Belarusians on the anniversary of the Slutsk uprising:

"Dear compatriots!

In November, many nations honor the memory of their heroes. For example, at 11 o'clock on the 11th day of the 11th month, the entire Canada honors a minute of silence to its soldiers. From the representative of the queen to the veterans and ordinary citizens, old and young — all recall their compatriots who gave their lives on the altar of the Fatherland, with gratitude. Wreaths are placed on the graves of unknown soldiers and corresponding events are held everywhere.

Until recently, Belarusian people did not know, because it was forbidden to know, about the first heroes of the first Belarusian state in the 20th century, our glorious Slutsk people who in 1920 fought for the Belarusian People's Republic. Only in the free world Belarusians knew about them, and honored them with gratitude in late November.

In the year 2017, Belarus still needs to ask permission from the city authorities to honor the memory of the heroes. And since it is never known to what extent the "men in civilian clothes" will let you celebrate the Heroes Day peacefully, not dozens of thousands people go to the streets, but several hundred grateful patriots.

Dear compatriots! I congratulate you today on behalf of the Rada of the Belarusian People's Republic on this great event in the life of our people — the Slutsk armed uprising. Recall with gratitude those ten thousand Heroes who wanted to protect you from the advancing invader-stranger. They deserve it. Eternal memory to them! Long Live Belarus!
