"We Need New Kalinouskis, Kastsiuskas and Varanoks"

Belarusians have shown that they are ready to change the world around them.

And this is the main result of the outgoing year, Kazimir Betkhen, a Minsk citizen, who joined the Belarusian National Congress in the spring, believes. The activist answered the questions of the BNC press service.

– What do you remember about 2017?

– In my opinion, the most important events are the spring protests, as well as the release of political prisoners. It’s sad, of course, that not all of them have been released. I hope that in 2018 we will be able to see Dzmitry Palienka, Mikhail Zhamchuzhny and the rest of the prisoners of conscience at large.

– What else, except the release of political prisoners, are you waiting for?

– The growth of protests due to further deterioration of the economic situation in our country. By the way, in February, a number of sanctions are expected against Putin. I think that, among other things, the Belarusian economy, related to the Russian market, will play a cruel joke with Lukashenka.

Street rallies, which have swept across the country this year, brought results. Decree No. 3 has been sent for revision, and the Belarusians have showed that they can change the world around them. But this is not enough. Decree No. 18, which has caused great public reaction, is still in force. The authorities are not going to carry out reforms. We need to continue the struggle, we need even more people on the streets, even more protests, because there is so much to be done.

– What would you wish Belarusians, all of us?

– Do not stop half way, as it happened this spring. Belarusians need new heroes. It's time to become such people as Kastus Kalinouski, Tadevush Kastsiushka, Yazep Varanko. If we take an example from these people, then the victory will be ours. And I wish the opposition activists, all the supporters of changes, to re-collect courage, self-confidence and confidence in their comrades and fight against this system with all the available methods.

I'm glad that I’ve joined the BNC, because I consider it my civic duty to fight against what I think is not right. Every citizen should participate in the life of his state, because the indifference of people has led to the current situation – total corruption, theft, falsification of elections, lawlessness of officials. Now, each of us needs to become a thorn in the side of this regime and its lackeys.
