The Wall Street Journal: Personal Enmity Exists Between Former Kolkhoz Chair And Former KGB Agent

The American media outlet has written about the relations of Putin and Lukashenka.

On the eve of the celebration of the Veterans’ Day in Belarus, Belarusian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenka, in his address to the Armed Forces on Wednesday made a special emphasis on the territorial integrity of the country. There is nothing surprising about this fact in itself, but Lukashenka’s rhetoric is becoming more defensive at the background of his discrepancies with the former patrons in Moscow, The Wall Street Journal writes.

The newspaper reminds about the conflict between Lukashenka and Putin due to the introduction of the visa-free regime by the Belarusian ruler for 79 countries, including the United States, and also because of the energy supplies from Russia.

Belarus is the co-founder of the Eurasian Economic Union, and Russia will not tolerate the country’s descent from its geopolitical and economic orbit, the journalists believe. It is stated in the article that personal enmity exists between the former collective farm chair and former KGB agent, which represents a further risk.

The West should take Lukashenka, who has ruled the former Soviet republic since 1994, into their arms. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, the United States and Western Europe can make it clear that they see and recognize the independence and the territorial integrity of Belarus.

The tension in Belarus once again shows that the problem with the assignment of the "sphere of influence" to Putin lies in the fact that even the states located close to Russia seem reluctant to be included into this sphere, the media outlet summarizes.
