The Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a special appeal to the government.

On March 23, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Polish Sejm appealed to the Polish government to take immediate measures to protect the repressed in Belarus, Charter97.org reports.

It is noted in the resolution signed by chairman of the commission Grzegorz Schetina, the Civil Platform leader and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland:

"The position on the crisis in Belarus of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, adopted at the meeting on March 23, 2017

The Foreign Affairs Commission of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland expresses deep concern over the wave of repression against participants of civil protests, independent journalists and public figures in Belarus. We urge the Minsk authorities to stop the persecution immediately and to release all those arrested and convicted. The Commission expresses its solidarity with the victims of repression, their families and close ones. Especially we are in favor of the liberation of Anatol Liabedzka, Yury Hubarevich, Pavel Seviarynets and Vital Rymasheuski – the arrested leaders of the Belarusian opposition, whom we hoped to host at the meeting of our Commission today.

The Foreign Affairs Committee urge the Government of the Republic of Poland to interfere promptly and defend the repressed in Belarus. We also expect that, by responding to the violation of civil rights and democratic freedoms, the Government of the Republic of Poland will continue to support and create new initiatives to support civil society in Belarus, especially independent media and human rights organizations.

The Foreign Affairs Commission expresses confidence that the only way for the authorities to overcome the social and economic crisis that has touched upon Belarus today, is to start a dialogue with civil society and the democratic opposition. Actions toward the dialogue and democratization, stoppage of the repression are to be the only condition for the normalization of political relations between Belarus and Poland, Belarus and the European Union.

Head of the Commission

Grzegorz Schetyna"
