80-Year-Old Poet Escaping From Detention Truck: I Will Go To All Our Actions With My Daughters

80-Year-Old Poet Escaping From Detention Truck: I Will Go To All Our Actions With My Daughters
YAN HRYB

Despite his age and the recent heart attack, Yan Hryb promises to go to the actions further on.

Yan Hryb, the 80-year-old Belarusian poet and his daughter went to the action on March 25 in Minsk. Instead of a procession and a holiday, I saw a brutal dispersal of peaceful civilians.

Unable to withstand the spectacle of causeless violence against Belarusians, Yan Hryb addressed to the officer standing next to him. In response, he was in a paddy wagon next to other detainees. When the riot police started leading people from the paddy wagon, the poet took advantage of the moment of confusion and happily escaped.

Yan Hryb has told belsat.eu about the moment of his detention:

“There was a young energetic guy who stormed into the open door at full speed, and the riot policemen ran off to catch him. There was such a big gap among the riot policemen, and it was such a mess. I am a hunter, I am cunning. I squeezed quietly into this gap... Stepped aside and decided to limp severely, so that they would not run after me. So I did, turned around – they didn’t run after me,” — Yan Hryb tells.

The poet’s daughter missed the fun of riding a detention truck.

The poet’s children go to the street actions with him since early childhood, and take white-red-white flags. Once the girls even saved him from violence. A policeman tried to hit the poet on the head with a baton at one of the actions in the1990s.

Yan Hryb shares his experience of participating in the street actions:

“My Tanya had a bonnet with milk, and she hit the policeman with this bonnet and said: This is my father! What are you doing? He shrinked, as these were kids, and he was also a human, despite the helmet and the shoulder-pads.”

Neither the police in masks and shields, nor the prospect of being thrown into the paddy wagon frighten the poet. Despite the age and the recent heart attack, he promises to come out to the actions further on. “Even half-dead, I would go. They can’t frighten me, they can only kill me. I will go to any of the actions, and tell my daughters to go, too.”

Yan Hryb was born in 1936, published in periodicals, published a collection of poems "At the Pile of the Seeds". Hunter and poet, he also organizes festivals of Belarusian culture.
