Today the European Parliament is to adopt a resolution on the political situation in Belarus.

The European Parliament is to vote on the resolution regarding the political situation in Belarus on Thursday, Interfax reports.

The draft document, which was brought out yesterday, condemns the dispersal of the protesters on March 25 and repressions on the eve of the demonstrations.

The draft resolution of the European Parliament emphasizes that "despite the calls of the international community for restraint, the reaction of the security services was indiscriminate and disproportionate."

EU deputies condemn "unreasonable restrictions on freedom of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of association in Belarus".

The European Parliament "urges the Belarusian authorities to conduct promptly a thorough and impartial investigation into all the reports on arbitrary detentions and other violations of the protesters’ rights in connection with the recent demonstrations."

It "warns that if such investigations are not carried out, the EU can apply new restrictive measures against Belarus’ high-ranking officials, who are responsible for recent repressions."
