Uladzimir Niakliayeu: Belarusians Are To Call Regime To Account
ULADZIMIR NIAKLIAYEU

The actions of the authorities only key up the courage to continue the struggle.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, poet and politician Uladzimir Niakliayeu has told about that in his interview to Charter97.org.

– Tomorrow you are summoned to the court, tell me, what is this government's campaign against you related to?

– It is mainly connected with the regime's war against its citizens. All these fines, arrests and detentions are caused only by the fact that today's ruler of Belarus is trying to cling to power with all his might, but all this will not affect our determination to continue the struggle.

I know about the power structures’ decision to sentence me to 15 days of arrest. I do not expect anything else from this trial.

– You had four hypertensive crises during your last arrest, might your possible arrest affect your state of health?

– The regime absolutely does not care about how people feel, even if they are sick or are dying. Before the last arrest, I said that I have health problems, showed them papers, but it did not affect the decision on my arrest. I do not intend to inform anyone about my state of health this time, because it does not help anything, but only looks like an attempt to protect myself and avoid reprisals. I did not try to defend myself, I only tried to draw attention to the problem and call for common sense. After all, they could convict me later, it would not affect anything, but again I repeat that it's all pointless. The regime simply dictates its demands, and the performers blindly fulfill them.

– Do you feel support and solidarity on the part of the Belarusians?

– Absolutely. A lot of people keep in touch with me. Now my phone is being wiretapped, and other means of communication are being listened to, so people come to my house, bring some presents and say words of support. The support is certainly there. I consider myself to be a type of person, who sees in the Belarusian people such traits of character as willingness to help. A lot of people would break down in such inhuman conditions are but the strong ones survive, and there are enough of such people to force the regime to answer for all the abuses.
