The Minsk court fined the leader of the people's protests for the May Day action.

One of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, poet and politician Uladzimir Niakliaeu was fined for 50 base fees (Bn 1150) for the May Day rally in the Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk.

The sentence was made by Judge Sviatlana Miatlionak from the Leninski District Court of Minsk. The well-known poet and politician did not appear at the trial, and was tried in absentia, Radio Liberty reports.

According to the police charges, Uladzimir Niakliaeu shouted slogans "Long Live Belarus!" and "Basta!" during the demonstration on the steps of the Palace of the Republic, and then took part in an unauthorized march along the sidewalks of the Independence Avenue.

Having watched the video from the scene, the court found out new information on what the poet was saying, addressing to the protesters.

"Belarus is ready for change and ready for a new life, and the fact that we are here today proves this," - the voice of Uladzimir Niakliaeu sounded. Also, the politician called for solidarity with the activists, who were detained in the so-called "patriots' case," and for the abolition of Decree # 3. While watching the video, the court could also hear how the protesters shouted: "Basta to Lukashenka's regime" and "Basta to the MIA regime".

Last week, Uladzimir Niakliaeu was released from the Akrestsin Street detention center, where he was serving a 5-day administrative arrest for participating in an unsanctioned rally. Immediately after his release from prison, the politician was handed a subpoena to the Leninski court for May 17 and warned that he would be arrested again.
