Ales Bialiatski Demands Prosecutor General's Office To Check Information On Torture Of Belarusian Patriots
ALES BIALIATSKI

The human rights activist appealed to the Prosecutor General of Belarus Aliaksandr Kaniuk.

Ales Bialiatski, the chairperson of the Human Rights Center "Viasna", addressed the Prosecutor General of Belarus Aliaksandr Kaniuk with a demand to verify information on the torture of the persons involved in the "case of patriots", who are kept in the KGB jail and the jail of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"As a representative of the Belarusian human rights community, I'm very much concerned about the information on the possible use of unlawful methods against the accused in this case. Especially considering the fact that the information about torture in the KGB jail, voiced by the presidential candidate Aliaksandr Mikhalevich, was confirmed," – the human rights website spring96.org quotes Bialiatski.

According to White Legion founder Siarhei Chyslou, the arrested persons are tortured and exposed to psychotropic substances in the remand prison.

"I believe that this information indicates possible violations of the rights of the people, who have been accused in this criminal case and are being kept in the KGB and Interior Ministry remand prisons. Special means and physical strength have possibly been used against the detainees by police officers and other state bodies’ representatives. Thus, one of the detainees Miraslau Lazouski, as follows from the piece shown on the national television, had been beaten during the detention, there were traces of blood and beatings on his face. Meanwhile, the lawfulness and the necessity to apply physical force against him must strictly comply with the requirements of the current legislation, there mustn’t be any physical abuse or tortures," – Bialiatski notes.

The human rights activist asks the Prosecutor General to verify the information provided by the media and bring to justice the perpetrators, when establishing the facts of the use of torture.
