Human Rights Defenders: Tortures Used Against "Patriots' Case" Figurants

Human rights defenders have evidences that illegal methods of pressure were used against the "patriots' case" defendants.

According to employee of the human rights center Viasna Anastasia Laiko, after the arrests that were shown on television, relatives and friends of some detainees noted their aberrant behaviour:

– They did not behave adequately, there was an atypical manner of behavior, which in principle could indirectly indicate that psychotropes had been used against the people. Now this information is gaining momentum, as it is confirmed by several sources. The story with an electric shocker. As far as I understand, also such measures of physical coercion as electric shockers were used against detainees at the KGB pre-trial detention center during the initial few days. We know about several people. Unfortunately, we cannot give details at the moment," – the human rights activist said to Radio Racyja.

These cases can be regarded as facts of direct torture, which is prohibited both at the national and international levels.

– Therefore, one can speak about absolutely gross violation of the detainees’ rights. In this regard, we have prepared an appeal to the General Prosecutor's Office," – Anastasia Laiko said.
