Andrei Sharenda Heads BNC Coalition In Brest
Andrei Sharenda

The main tasks of the coalition will be the struggle for the release of political prisoners and popular protests.

Yesterday, leaders of the Belarusian National Congress Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Niakliayeu met with political activists from Brest.

European Belarus civil campaign activist from Brest Andrei Sharenda told Charter97.org about that.

"More than 30 people came to the meeting at the editorial office of the newspaper Brest Courier. There were both opposition activists representing the European Belarus civil campaign, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada), the organizing committee of the Belarusian Christian Democracy and representatives of the REP Independent Trade Union, other politically active people: bloggers, participants in popular protest rallies that do not belong to any of the organizations. Brest blogger Siarhei Piatrukhin held a stream of the meeting.

Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Niakliayeu talked about BNC activities and objectives and answered activists’ questions. Most of the people, who came to the meeting, were interested in how the opposition is going to unite. These are the questions that were asked most: how and when the unification will come to pass, who is ready to become the leader to guide the people. Activists of different organizations noted that people in Brest are ready for such unification.

As a result, it was decided to establish a BNC regional coalition in Brest. I was elected as the leader of the coalition, Natallia Papkova from the BSDP (People's Hramada) and Aliaksandr Khrapko from the BCD – as deputy heads. As the head of the regional organization, I was also delegated to the BNC Rada.

It was decided that the main areas of our activity will be, firstly, the campaign on solidarity and demand to release political prisoners, as well as helping disgruntled Belarusians in organizing and holding street rallies. All the activists, who came from the Brest region, stressed that the social and economic situation there is extremely tense: people do not have work and are ready to protest and take to the streets. People are determined and just waiting for the leader, who would call them to go to a rally. The district residents asked to tell at the meeting with the BNC leaders: we expect politicians to act more resolutely."

We remind that now the BNC Rada consists of 14 regional coalition leaders and 7 representatives of national organizations. No more than 3 leaders of regional coalitions can enter the BNC Rada from each region.
